Kiva: Loans that change lives |
I’ve blogged about Kiva before on my old website, but since I deleted all of the old posts, I’m going to write about it again. And I’m also linking to my public profile from the “About” block on the left, so you can see the entrepreneurs I’m supporting… So, Kiva is a SF-based non-profit organization that lets you lend money to entrepreneurs in developing countries. What a great way to help people! Enabling people to help themselves and their family. Especially people in developing countries, where social mobility is very difficult and is just becoming harder and harder. My experience running AeroTropical (fast food tropical fruit stand) in Brazil, showed me hands on a sad reality in the world. We’ve had some good people working for us, but they really had no opportunities to get out of poverty, and that’s the same in most of the countries to which Kiva sends your money (through their micro-lending partners). So, you’re not donating any money, they borrow money from you and pay back within a year. If you go on the site, I guarantee you’ll feel compelled to lend. You can start with just $25. And if you read about the simple things these people need, and about their personal lives… and you think back how much $25 is worth to you, and what you could do with it instead… it’s a no brainer. So, check it out: www.kiva.com I lend $100 last year and I got it paid back, so I re-lend to four more entrepreneurs. Check it out, and share your profile here when you create one! |
